The North Country Triathlon was founded in 2007 by Randy Engler. The first race consisted of just 125 racers, and 40 volunteers. The race has grown tremendously over the years and now has over:
· 500 triathletes from 4 countries, and over 15 states · 700 of their friends and families in tow · 500+ local and regional spectators · 150 enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers from our community Each year, the race donates a portion of its proceeds to local, regional, and global non-profits. Our races always aim to be extremely well organized, environmentally sensitive, very challenging, and a ton of fun for everyone involved. Hague, New York is an ideal location for the race with rolling hills, and the crystal clear waters of Lake George. Our Olympic and Sprint distance cycling courses are some of the most challenging in the region.
John is North Country Triathlon’s race director. John was introduced to the Lake George area during his college years when he worked summers at The Silver Bay Association. From running the trails behind the lake, to kayaking the ponds and rivers, to road rides in the surrounding countryside, the Adirondacks have provided the perfect training terrain from which to launch many adventures. It didn’t take long for hobbies to turn to racing and John was competing in triathlons, bike races, marathons, and adventure races. John found the most success in Adventure Racing (2007 National Champion, Team EMS), he’s no stranger to the triathlon circuit having competed in many NE based races culminating in the Lake Placid Ironman. Over the past couple of years John has discovered the rewards of being on the management side of racing. He has served as the chair of the athlete advisory committee for the U.S. Adventure Racing Association for the past 5yrs and was the head racecourse official at the 2008 Adventure Racing National Championships. John resides for most of the year in Sayulita, Mexico with his wife Julie.
