North Country Events has teamed up with 1% FOR THE PLANET because we believe that the sustainability of the natural environment is fundamental to the sustainability of business.  1% FTP recognizes that industry and ecology are inherently connected. It’s about realizing the positive effects of connecting businesses, consumers and nonprofits through philanthropy. And it’s about understanding that the true cost of doing business can be mitigated by a simple pledge to the planet.

North Country Events promotes challenging, multi-sport events designed to have the greatest impact on healthy life-styles and the least amount of impact on the environment.

Hope Lodge

American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge®

For more than 20 years, the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge® in Burlington, Vermont has been a lifeline for hundreds of cancer patients and their caregivers and has provided a free "home away from home" for cancer patients.  This small, unassuming house near Fletcher Allen Health Care can currently only accommodate a fraction of the patients who need to travel long distances to Burlington each year for lifesaving treatment at our region’s only comprehensive cancer center.

Located at the entrance to Fletcher Allen Health Care, the new Hope Lodge will triple the capacity of the existing building, making state-of-the-art residential facilities available for nearly 2,000 guests each year who cannot afford accommodations near their cancer treatment. Hope Lodge’s Quality of Life Center will house American Cancer Society programs, as well as cancer prevention, detection, and patient outreach staff for all residents of Burlington particularly those affected by cancer and in the area’s under-served neighborhoods.

Mission

Room to Read partners with local communities throughout the developing world to establish schools, libraries, and other educational infrastructure. We seek to intervene early in the lives of children in the belief that education is a lifelong gift that empowers people to ultimately improve socioeconomic conditions for their families, communities, countries, and future generations. Through the opportunities that only an education can provide, we strive to break the cycle of poverty, one child at a time.

Results to Date

Since our inception in 2000, Room to Read has impacted the lives of over 1.3 million children by:
  • Constructing 287 schools
  • Establishing over 3,870 libraries
  • Publishing 146 new local language children's titles representing over 1.3 million books
  • Donating over 1.4 million English language children's books
  • Funding 3,448 long-term girls' scholarships
  • Establishing 136 computer and language labs
Brief History

John Wood, Founder and CEO, launched Room to Read after a trek through Nepal. He visited several local schools and was amazed by the warmth and enthusiasm of the students and teachers, but also saddened by the shocking lack of resources. Driven to help, John quit his senior executive position with Microsoft and built a global team to work with rural villages to build sustainable solutions to their educational challenges.
